Riesling Report

Riesling Estates in the Pfalz

The Pfalz (just say faults, but start with your lips closed) is a fairly large wine region in the rolling hills just south of Rheinhessen. Warmer conditions and heavier soils make for full-bodied, stony wines. The Pfalz is especially well suited to the production of dry Riesling.

Bernd Philippi exemplifies the notion that wines reflect the personalities of their makers. His wines, like himself, are powerful and boisterous on the outside, yet reveal an inner core that is complex and harmoniously refined.

Astonishingly flamboyant wines from what has long been the finest estate in the Pfalz. Cellarmaster Hans-Günter Schwarz is generally regarded as the modern guru of the reductive winemaking renaissance in Germany. He crafts superbly concentrated and extracted wines from Riesling, Scheurebe, Weißburgunder and Rieslaner.

Ernst Loosen, owner of the world-class Dr. Loosen estate on the Mosel, has taken on another wine estate, this one in the Pfalz region. The estate is J.L. Wolf in the village of Wachenheim.
As with his intense and powerful Mosel wines, Ernst aims to preserve the traditional character of the region and the grape variety (mostly Riesling), but with a new level of concentration and opulence. Typically, wines from the Pfalz are weightier than Mosel wines, and have a style that’s rounder and more earthy. The wines are clean and focused with good body, full fruit flavors and a strong backbone.
Please see our review of this estate in the March/April issue of Riesling Report.
